2010 NCHIMA President’s Letter  
                                                                                    

NCHIMA held the 2010 Summer Meeting July 16 at the VA Medical Center.  Dr. Nick Paulk kicked off the day providing insight to Revascularization Surgery.  Complicated procedures were made palatable with excellent pictures, diagrams, and humor.  Dr. Paulk is an excellent instructor who bravely stepped out of his world to talk to us in ‘our world’ [of HIM].  It was very well done.

Participants were enlightened to the many features of the VA’s electronic record including their personal health record, My Healthe Vet.  Anyone seeking to learn more about electronic health records should see every example possible, as we are in an era of remarkable changes and improvements across the board for electronic record functionality.  The VA has been quite a leader of ingenuity in this area.  The engaging speakers, Donna Bonnet, M.S., and Jeff Terrill, R.N. provided us with many real-time examples.  It was insightful to both ‘veteran’ and rookie HIM professionals. 

We learned more about ICD-10 from Jane Cook, CPC.  And more about End Stage Renal Disease, and other related disease processes and revenue codes from Beth Croker.  My hat is off to Beth who did not miss a beat when the projector light seemed to burn out.  She was grace under pressure, there is much to be learned from those that can go with the flow!

Culinary Waves provided the food for the day and I must say it was very good!

I cannot leave without mentioning the impression the VA employees left us with.  They are a group of compassionate, dedicated, heart-moving individuals.  We thank Teresa McClaran and James Sternesky for their time and talents.  It was a wonderful day of sharing and learning.  Kudos to the NCHIMA Program chairs, Jeanette Gulder and Sheila Key.
